Where would you normally use the timber handrail volute (or scroll) ?
As a decorative way of terminating the handrail at the bottom of a staircase. Combined with a bullnose tread, a volute (aka scroll) will give any staircase that look of grandeur.

How do I know whether I need a left hand or right hand one ?
Standing at the bottom of a staircase and looking up the stair, a left hand volute is on your left side, and a right hand volute is on your right.

What is it made out of ?
Plantation grown Radiata Pine.

What are the important dimensions ?
The overall width of the volute is 260mm.
The arm of the volute is pitched at 37 degrees, which is an angle that most staircases are built at.

How do you fix it to the handrail ?
Use either the Zipbolt ST-Maxi UT or Zipbolt UT Rail Bolt. Glue the join and then apply a small amount of sanding to blend.

How should you finish it ?
As the handrail (to which the bend will be joined) has finger-jointing which is visible, we suggest that it should only be used for painting purposes.
If wanting to stain and lacquer, we suggest using the Vic Ash, American Oak or Meranti version of the same volute.
Speak to your local paint retailer for more info.
